Samsung Austin Semiconductors LLC is cutting 290 jobs at its Samsung Austin Research Center, a research and development facility on North Capital of Texas Highway starting Dec. 1.
ExtremeTech reported that Samsung was looking to cease development of its own core CPUs — key components in computer hardware that perform calculations. The company is also closings its Central Processing Unit facility in San Jose, California. It is not known how many employees will be affected.
Samsung Austin Semiconductor spokeswoman Michele Glaze told KXAN News that affected employees will be able to work with a recruiting firm to find new jobs.
“We don’t take this lightly,” said Glaze. “It’s a hard and difficult decision.”
Samsung is one of the largest technology and manufacturing companies in Austin. The company employed about 3,600 people in the Austin area as of earlier this month.
